Gluten-free, Organically Grown and Healthy Adlai Rice | Adlay Grain | Job’s Tears | Chinese Pearl Barley | Coix Seed

Job’s tears—also known as coix seed, Chinese pearl barley, or hato mugi in Japanese and Adlai rice/grits in the Philippines—are named for the way they look while still in the husk: like fat, shining brown or grey teardrops. The name refers to the teardrop shape of each grain and the biblical story of a man named Job who suffered greatly. Depending on the region in which it is grown, it is also sometimes called “Christ’s Tears” or “Mary’s Tears.”

Description

WHY WE LOVE IT

  1. For rice-lovers but health-conscious individuals, Adlai/Adlay rice is a healthier, low-carb and gluten-free alternative.
  2. In folk medicine, it is used for headaches, fever, inflammation and arthritis. For the modern generation suffering from “lifestyle diseases”, Adlai/Adlay is gluten free and has a low glycemic index which makes it a good choice for gluten-intolerant people and those suffering from diabetes.
  3. Adlai can be used in any rice recipe like bringhe, risotto, paella or as an ingredient in soups and broth or even just steamed like everyday rice. The grain can be ground into flour and used to make bread, pasta, and porridge.
  4. For desserts, adlai can be cooked into maja blanca, champorado, polvoron and turones de adlai. It can also be used to make our  very own Filipino kakanin.

WHERE IT GROWS

Our Adlai is organically grown and carefully cultivated by the Indigenous people in the highland mountain ranges of Arakan Valley (near Bukidnon), Mindanao.
